This year in guidance your child met Kelso the frog and is learning all
about Kelso’s Choices! Kelso’s Choices help children learn how to solve
small problems without asking for help from an adult or tattling. We
discussed the difference between big problems, that are dangerous, scary,
and could hurt you, and small problems that just annoy you and can make
you angry or sad.

We learned that BIG problems ALWAYS require the help of a big person -
a grown up that you trust (parents, teachers, grandparents, bus-drivers, etc).
You know it’s a big problem if you feel scared or don’t feel safe. (examples
are seeing a stranger or someone physically hitting)

 We also learned that students are strong enough and smart enough to
handle most small problems by themselves without tattling or asking for
help for every small problem. Small problems usually make us feel a little
sad or mad. (examples are someone breaking in line, teasing, or bothering
us )

The magic question to ask ourselves, and that adults can ask children
when they are trying to solve a problem is, "Is what I am about to tell an
adult a big problem or a small problem?"  If it is a big problem, then you
must tell a grownup.  If it is a small problem, then try to work it out on your
own first by using one of the 9 Kelso choices.

Kelso’s Choices:
1. Go to another game (if someone is cheating, or not playing fair)

2. Share and take turns (if you want to borrow something or vice versa)

3. Apologize (if you hurt someone's feelings)

4. Ignore (if someone is saying mean words)

5. Tell them to please stop (ask them to stop saying mean words)

6. Walk away (if they continue to tease walk away)

7. Wait and cool off (take a deep breath and think about what you
need to say)

8. Talk it out (tell the person using an I-message how you feel. ex: I feel
mad because...)

9. Make a deal. (Decide together with the person who made you mad/sad
what you can do together to solve the problem)
